How to Increase Your Moving Company's Close Rate

What close rate is — and why it beats buying more leads

Close rate is the percentage of leads you quote that turn into booked, confirmed moves. If you quote 100 leads and book 20, your close rate is 20%. Because you've already paid to generate those leads, lifting close rate raises revenue without raising ad spend — which is why it usually beats simply buying more leads.

Doubling close rate has the same revenue effect as doubling lead volume, but at a fraction of the cost. That makes it the highest-leverage number most movers aren't actively managing.

Lever 1: Speed

The faster you reach a lead, the more likely they are to still be deciding when you talk to them. Reach them first and you're the anchor every other quote gets compared to; reach them last and you're often confirming a decision they've already made. Speed-to-lead is the single biggest lever on close rate for most movers.

Lever 2: Qualify before you quote

A rushed quote based on incomplete information either scares the customer off or wins a job your crew loses money on. Confirming move size, distance, dates, access, and special items lets you present a price the customer trusts and your operation can actually deliver.

Good qualifying also surfaces the customer's real priorities — date certainty, care with fragile items, an exact price — so you can sell to what matters to them instead of leading with price alone.

Lever 3: Present price with context

Price is where many quotes die, usually because it's delivered as a bare number with no framing. Presenting the same price alongside what's included — the crew, the care, the guarantees, the certainty of the date — changes how the customer weighs it against cheaper, riskier options.

Confidence matters too. A rep who quotes clearly and stands behind the price closes more than one who sounds unsure or apologizes for the number.

Lever 4: Follow up every time

Even a great first call rarely books on the spot. Consistent multi-touch follow-up across call, text, and email recovers the large share of jobs that book on a later attempt. Skipping it caps your close rate no matter how strong your first conversation is.

Improving these levers is mostly an execution problem. A dedicated sales team — in-house or outsourced — exists to run all four on every lead, which is what steadily moves the close-rate number.
